Bastrop Music Newz

Bastrop’s live music scene is bopping as 2017 gets underway. Open mics as well as other free music happenings that include some of Bastrop’s best-known musicians are being held at several venues/restaurants. On a recent balmy Sunday afternoon Linda Greene was cookin’ on vocals while backed up by The Soultines at a Gospel brunch at Viejos Tacos y Tequila, 811 Main St. Greene sang inspirational Gospel songs supported by a talented band, including guitarists Jimmy Watts and Larry Wilson. The free music runs from noon-3 p.m. on the 2d and 4th Sundays of the month at Viejos.

One of the newer gigs in town is an open mic being hosted by guitarists James Aldridge – aka “Blue-eyed James” – and John Cavallaro at Bastrop’s American Legion Post 533 on the last three Saturdays of every month. Actually, the Legion’s open mic could be called a rebirth, as ‘Blue-eyed’ ran a similar gig at the Legion several years ago. Cavallaro encouraged participation of musicians by pointing out that instruments (guitars, bass, drums, P.A., and more) are provided for free. “Don’t bring anything except your talent!” Cavallaro exclaimed. (Friendly note from this writer: Cavallaro is one of few musicians around town who apparently knows all the chords and breaks to “Jumpin’ Jack Flash.” He can really crank on it!). The Legion also has karaoke on Friday nights. It is located on Loop 150 East, across from the entrance to Bastrop State Park.

The Back 9 Bar, part of a golfing range at 834 Hwy. 71 West – look for the huge white golf ball out front –  also has an open mic on Wednesdays starting at 8 p.m. Gracie’s at 706 Pine Street presents live music on its outdoor/covered patio and stage as the weather warms. Karaoke also continues to be a popular draw at many other area venues as some talented amateurs get a chance to share songs. The Old Town Restaurant & Bar (corner of Main and Chestnut Streets) and Ronnie’s One Oak (816 FM 1441) are two venues offering karaoke, as well as bands. See their Facebook pages for upcoming events. (Editor’s note: This regular feature article/column will offer interviews/updates/briefs covering Bastrop County bands and solo musicians– with photo galleries by Terry Hagerty of live performances.  Please Email any info on area musicians/bands to: terryhagerty@
