No Flames At Hospital; A Hard Crash

On Monday shortly before noon Bastrop firefighters responded to a smell of smoke and a potential “structure fire” – as first heard over a police scanner – at Bastrop’s St. David’s Emergency Center. Firefighters and police could be seen on the roof, checking out the situation as one main engine responded just in case it was needed. A fire official said a ballast for fluorescent lighting in the building’s lab was emitting smoke, but that there was no fire.

Smithville firefighters said the two drivers of these SUVs luckily walked away from a crash last week on Hwy. 71 East near Smithville. A fire marshal said the westbound driver of the Ford SUV was crossing over from a turn area in the highway median – and pulling into a business – when it was broadsided by an eastbound Lexus SUV. The marshal said it was fortunate that there wasn’t a person in the passenger side of the Ford, because of the severity of the impact. The names of the drivers were not immediately available, nor whether anyone was cited in the wreck.  (Photos by Terry Hagerty)
